Behaviour Consultations

A dog’s behaviour concerns can range from a little displeasing to downright dangerous. While nothing takes the place of a hands-on, private consultation in the comfort of your home, a virtual consultation may be all you need to solve your dog’s behaviour concerns. And, for some people who live in a remote location, having a Behaviour Advisor visit them at their home is simply not an option. At least this way, you can get professional advice suited to your unique requirements and don’t have to rely on a questionable article you read on the internet, which may not suit your dog’s behaviour concerns or be helpful in identifying the cause of the unwanted behaviour. Additionally, as we will be able to see one another, it is easy to show you how to do any exercises involved.

We offer virtual consultations via Zoom. All you need is a computer, a steady online connection and a webcam and you can meet with us to resolve your dog training and/or behaviour issues. You don’t even need to live in the same area as our Behaviour Advisors, in fact we can meet with you from anywhere in the world!

Some possible topics that can be covered in a virtual session include, but are not limited to:

  • Training techniques and instructions on typical obedience behaviours
  • Pre- and post-adoption counselling
  • General advice on choosing the right puppy or dog and how to introduce your new dog to existing dogs or children.
  • Common dog behaviour problems such as house training, barking, begging, pulling on leash, jumping on people, attention-seeking behaviour, mouthing and nipping, mounting, humping and scent marking, mild separation anxiety, mild phobias, hyperactivity, destructive behaviour (chewing and digging), reactivity and resource guarding of food, toys, humans, etc.
  • Serious dog behaviour issues such as severe separation anxiety and some forms of aggression. Dog aggression cases are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. If we determine you need an in-home consultation we can help you seek out a competent professional in your area.

Simple Online Courses

Our e-courses are presented at the grassroots level, making it easy to follow and implement. The courses are not designed or intended to qualify participants for employment, but intended for the personal enrichment and enjoyment of the participants. The courses are directed at people who wish to expand their knowledge and understanding of dog behaviour and learn how to meet the needs of the dogs in their care. So, whether you are merely a dog owner wanting to learn how to transform your dog, or whether you work with dogs and want to expand your knowledge or skills, our e-courses have you covered:

Life Skills 101

One of the most important things we can do for our dogs, is to equip them with a set of cues or words that enable us to keep them out of harm's way and allow us to have a stress-free life with them. These cues help us guide our dogs and open up clear lines of communication between owner and dog, which will give them clarity about what we require from them.

The Behaviour Management Course For Reactive Dogs

Reactive dogs are triggered by stimuli in the indoor and outdoor environment (it could be noise, other dogs, people, fast moving objects, etc.) and have an emotional response to it. The response can be driven by many factors, but the most common are fear or frustration. Since these dogs are usually leashed and don’t have the option of retreating, they tend to explode in self-defence. Others are just over-excited and frustrated because they really want to go and say "hi" to the dog or person passing by, but can't because they are restrained.

Those emotional explosions present itself in the form of whining, barking, growling or lunging and this may come across as aggression to others. These dogs are not mean, they are usually petrified or over-aroused. They still deserve to be exercised and explore the outside world in a controlled manner, and in many cases, this is a major part of their rehabilitation!

This 6-week practical, results-driven course contains proven step-by-step recipes that will give you the tools to effectively manage your dog's behaviour and environment in order to prevent these outbursts from occurring regularly, and to systematically desensitise your dog to his triggers, so he can make better choices when exposed to it.

Clicker FUNdamentals
Clicker training is a popular reward-based animal training method using positive reinforcement. The goal is for your dog to quickly recognise which action is required from him and repeat it in the future. In clicker training, you use a small handheld device called a clicker that makes an audible clicking sound when you press the button. This clicking sound is paired with a food reward and replaces the “marker word” (i.e. "good") you would normally use to tell your dog that he’s done something right. Many people find it a better way to communicate and get their dog’s attention than using marker words, because the click is a distinctive sound and always sends the same message. In contrast to this, the tone and volume of your voice can change and therefore, your voice does NOT always send the same message.
