Clicker training is a popular reward-based animal training method using positive reinforcement. The goal is for your dog to quickly recognise which action is required from him and repeat it in the future. In clicker training, you use a small handheld device called a clicker that makes an audible clicking sound when you press the button. This clicking sound is paired with a food reward and replaces a “marker word” you would use to tell your dog that he’s done something right, like “good”. Many people find it a better way to communicate and get their dog’s attention than using marker words, because the click is a distinctive sound and always sends the same message. In contrast to this, the tone and volume of your voice can change and therefore, your voice does NOT always send the same message.

When a food reward follows the click, this teaches your dog that the behaviour he offered and the associated click will result in a yummy reward for him. As you can imagine, it’s a very motivating factor for your dog to repeat the behaviour he now has a positive association with.

Box clickers are classic devices that some trainers and owners prefer, because they usually deliver a softer clicking sound than most standard clickers today, which is great for dogs who suffer from noise phobia / sound sensitivity. This makes them ideal for training in groups too. Instead of pushing a button, you press down on the metal sheet within the box to create the clicking sound. The rectangular box fits into your hand and comes with a wrist strap. The clicker has a sturdy metal design. Colours may vary from the images provided.
