Biltong & Marmite Dog Biscuits

Biltong & Marmite Dog Biscuits

These dog biscuits are a favourite in our house. The dogs jump for joy every time I reach for one of these tasty treats. The recipe makes about 30 biscuits and it’s super easy to put together.

In addition to gaining a healthier bank account by making your own dog biscuits, you can also be sure of the health benefits for your dog. Every so often we have scares of toxic ingredients or potentially lethal bacteria in our pet food, but by making your own dog treats, you can control what you put into your dog’s mouth. So knowing how to make dog biscuits ensures that your pets are consuming healthier ingredients.

IMPORTANT: If you use treats when training your dog, keep each treat reward about the size of a pea and factor treats into your dog’s overall daily food allowance. Small bits generally mean your dog will take longer to get full, so he should remain interested and willing to work a bit longer. Treats should be made from good quality ingredients that are safe for dogs to ingest.

PREP TIME: 30 minutes, BAKING TIME: 45 – 50 minutes

INGREDIENTS:
– 70ml (65g) Soft Margarine or Butter
– 10ml Marmite
– 1 Large Egg
– 140ml (75g) Milk Powder
– 715 ml (500g / 2 cups) Wholemeal Flour
– 125ml (50g) Powdered Biltong

METHOD:
– Preheat your oven to 160 ͦ C.
– Add all of the dry ingredients to a mixing bowl and give it a quick stir.
– Place the margarine / butter, Marmite and egg into another mixing bowl and, using a fork or whisk, beat it for about a minute.
– Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix it with a spoon until everything is combined and no dry ingredients remain in the mixing bowl.
– Cover a large chopping board with cling wrap and scatter some flour onto the covered board.
– Scoop the mixture onto the covered chopping board, add some more flour over the mixture for ease of handling and press it into a ball.
– Using a rolling pin (or empty wine bottle), roll the dough out and cut into shapes with your cookie cutter. You want the dough to be around 8 – 10 mm thick once rolled out.
– Place your cut-out dough shapes onto lined or lightly greased baking trays.
– Bake at 160 ͦ C for 45 – 50 minutes.
– These treats last for quite a while. After removing them from the oven, let them cool down properly and dry out a bit (for at least an hour) before transferring them to an airtight container.
